Physical Description: Hawa is tall and broad-shouldered, fairly muscular from all of his physical training. This, coupled with the amount of flying he does in his other form, lends to his strength and fitness. He’s build very solidly, with a powerful chest and arms. He can’t seem to keep weight on very well (his amount of physical activity coupled with the small diet of his people), so his waist tapers a bit more narrowly from his torso down to his hips.
He appears in his mid-to-late twenties, amber-gold eyes (same colour as the ones in his owl form) shadowed by eyebrows that are—more often than not—furrowed as though in deep thought or else annoyance. His hair is brown, short and tufting up from his forehead. He also grows a faint moustache and lets stubble remain on his chin and his jaw.
In his other form, he’s a snowy owl of considerable size, though no more unusual a size you’d expect from an adult bird.
Sexuality: Hawa’s orientation gears toward bisexuality. It is like this with most, though not all, of his clan. They aren’t too concerned with gender because—on a reproduction standpoint—they are very long-lived and therefore do not need to be in as much of a hurry to reproduce or leave a legacy behind them. Those who do choose to start families often have many children, in some cases. They also aren’t disinclined to couple with humans if the human in question is accepting of the fact they are magical creatures.
Hawa himself has been together with others (female and male) in the past, mostly for one-time things, and more when he travelled to the human realm. Out of his element and away from his people, sometimes something to stave off the loneliness was nice, if only temporary.
World Information: The Otherworld is a realm parallel to the human one, existing in its own little dimension. It’s inhabited by all those creatures that humans always tell stories about, those creatures that were once believed in as more than myth. It’s a realm thickly suffused with magic—more than food or water or anything of that kind, those that dwell here need magic around them in order to survive. In the old days in the human realm parallel to their own, there was actually magic and therefore they were able to dwell among the humans for a time. Gradually, the magic faded, lost to the dregs and memories of time, and they were forced to return to the Otherworld lest they be drained of all of their own magic.
There are passages still from the Otherworld to the human realm—sometimes hidden, sometimes obvious; though it isn’t often a kind of folk chooses to build their home near said passages. However, the birdsong folk (daoine an cheiliúir) do. They are born from eggs and initially take on a bird form, but being so close to the passage has resulted in them being influenced by humankind. So, they possess the ability to change between human and a bird form. If they don’t change, their magic will start to wane and they will be stuck as one or another (as the smooth flow of the magics through both forms keeps them going). This sometimes happens should they choose to explore the human realm and grow fond of it, though there are the rare exceptions that fare well enough if they find a source of magic in the other realm.
The clan itself lives on upraised platforms, bordered by a thick and lush forest. They’re peaceful fey and usually prefer not to get engaged in conflicts. It has happened, though, as conflicts always happen in the Otherworld. When such a time arises that they need the warriors, they have a specialised type of militia/police force known as the upholders. Led by two captains, a male and a female, they have different birds—scouts, trackers, fighters, espionage, all of whom can apply to be an upholder but the ones are specially chosen. They have to possess an aptitude for magic, or else excel at another thing to be chosen. Even then, they’re tested.
Magic itself in the birdsong folk can be fickle. Most of the people are born with an enhanced sense of smell that can identify other supernatural creatures because of its gearing toward scenting magic. Sometimes, magic will manifest itself more in some than others, such as the single elder of the clan, who leads it. He possesses the ability to commune with spirits and ghosts. There is only ever one elder to lead the clan, and he often does so until a suitable candidate is chosen or else he dies in some fashion and a replacement must be picked (oftentimes they are a temporary one and are members of the upholders).
The world itself, the otherworld, is enormous in scope and describing the entirety of it would take a while. There are different portions of it—the otherworld where the normal fey and magical beasts live, and the realm in which the gods dwell, which has no name. The birdsong folk believe strongly in the Morrígan, who is the goddess of battle, strife and fertility to them. They believe that she is the one who meets you at the gates into the god’s realm and judges your worth.
As for the human world, it is much the same as our own Earth. Save, perhaps, for the supernatural creatures that flit here and there, that remain hidden in cities…
History:
Hawa was born the only egg in a clutch, to a pair of—predictably—owls. A prestigious couple amongst the clan, his father had served in the upholders for some time. His mother had worked in the upholders as well, though as a recorder (that is to say, she wrote down history and battles of the clan). He was raised as any other hatchling in the clan was; he was taught from when he was young to change forms to nurture the magic in his body.
It was about the time he was a fledgling that Regent came into his life.
Regent was his elder brother…of sorts. He had been found on the edge of clan grounds a couple of years prior, but had been under the careful eye of the clan elder and his daughter. When he was older and they deemed him safe (nothing like a demon or else some kind of shapeshifter or unfriendly fey), they released him to Hawa’s family to raise along their son (others had had too many children or else didn’t like the idea of bringing up a strange child in their home).
The two didn’t get along, at first—Regent was older than Hawa by a few years, and Hawa was unused to sharing space with another child, much less one who wasn’t his blood sibling. Even while Regent tried to extend the olive branch and be kind to his new younger sibling, Hawa snubbed him initially. Furthermore, as they both aged, Regent proved himself a natural in many aspects. He possessed a strong proficiency with magic that would catch their teachers’ eyes as well as the eyes of some of the upholders. Jealousy Hawa started to grow in spades, up until the point Regent tried extending the olive branch once more, offering to teach him if he wanted.
Perhaps surprisingly, Hawa accepted. But one must recognise that he was a competitive boy and one that aspired to become even stronger, better than he was. If that meant accepting some help from Regent along the way, well, he’d swallow his pride if he had to. Especially when it was obvious Regent was more skilled than himself. Not in his calculations, though, would that he would grow to like Regent. Regent was clever, witty and—most of all—patient and kind. He treated Hawa differently than others would and Hawa grew to like him more and more (though he didn’t say so, of course!).
They grew up close to together now into their adult years—when Hawa was old enough, he implored the upholders to let him take the test to become one of them. By this time, Regent had already joined and was in fact being considered as the next elder and leader of the clan, due to his recognised status as a prodigy. Upon the upholder’s permission being given and a date set for the test in question, Regent was the one who helped Hawa train. He wasn’t easy on his ‘younger brother’, of course, drilling him and putting him through more intense training than Hawa had ever experienced before.
He accepted it, though, recognising it as the only way he was going to get stronger. By now he had developed an aptitude for magic as well (not as much as Regent, but still enough to be notable) and could utilise it with some skill. With hard work and dedication (and his elder brother’s help), he became one of the upholders. Still a new member, but he was in. Now, over the course of the years, his goals and motivations had changed from wanting to be better and stronger to wanting to be better and stronger than his elder brother. Out of some fierce desire to prove himself to the older sibling who was murmured about by other clan members, Hawa aspired to be better than what he was.
A stubborn and unyielding youth, the same attitude carried over (with a little added maturity) to his adult years. Not long after his acceptance into the upholders, though, suspicious things started happening—the gnomes whose territory bordered the forest belonging to the clan were on the move. It wasn’t until the first attack though that any of them had any suspicion as to what was happening. A scout had been sent into the gnome’s territory to have a look around; perhaps figure out what was going on. That little thing was enough to incite them to attack. The fey folk and supernatural are—usually—very possessive over their territories. And something had been happening to influence the gnomes… While they were skittish and oftentimes nervous and suspicious, they had never lashed out at their peaceable neighbours before.
Of course, the true source of their sudden attack was never discovered, but it remained on the minds of all those involved with the war.
It started off small—minor skirmishes which the elder thought wouldn’t escalate into more. However, when members of the clan started to be taken (as prisoners of war), then it got serious. Hawa was affected by one of these kidnappings, as most of the clan were; one of the ones they captured was Regent, and he was held in some unknown location. As the days and weeks passed, things got more and more desperate. The forest which the clan got most of their food was ravaged and, due to their positioning, they weren’t left many other options for food. They were near the passage to the human realm but, because of how the two realms worked, none were sent through in case by the time they came back with provisions, a long time had passed in the otherworld.
Meanwhile, Hawa was getting more and more agitated. With Regent gone, he was working up to a frenzy of worrying.
At last, though, they found where the prisoners were kept and started to prepare their plans. Hawa wanted to charge right in, but the elder prevented him, even warning him he’d lock him away by force if necessary. Scouts were sent to get reinforcements—the gnomes had done similarly—and they had to wait until said reinforcements (gryphons, harpies, even a witch from far within the isles).
By the time they mounted their last large assault, over eight years had passed since the beginning of the conflict, and three months Regent had been kidnapped, along with two others. When they found him, however, they found a horrible truth— He had eaten the two who had been trapped with him in order to sustain him, drawing their magic into his own body, their remaining life force. Hawa was not a part of the retrieving party, but called to see his elder brother when he returned, he saw Regent’s eyes were not what they were. They were haunted and shadowed, sunken in to a face deprived of sunlight for months, and there was a weight pressing on the other’s once-proud stature, his frame reduced to little more than a gaunt fragment of whom he had been.
There, Hawa was the witness as his brother was banished from the clan, escorted him to the passage to the human realm. He didn’t know how to react. Something in him wished it wasn’t true, but Regent said nothing to deny it, only smiled in a pained, rueful fashion. Little did Hawa know, but Regent was banished as much as for his sake as anything. If those in the clan found out he had cannibalised his own kind, there was no telling what the parents of those who had been victims would do. Even if it was for the sake of his survival, some would not excuse Regent for that reason alone.
So Hawa saw his brother off, unable to say a word in response to Regent’s ‘farewell’.
Years passed. Peace settled over the clan as a treaty was negotiated between those two factions who had warred. Everything returned to how it was; the forest grew back, new members were born, life went on and most forgot about Regent. His death had been announced along with the other two, said that his corpse had been so unrecognisable they’d buried him right away to avoid showing the members the horror. Haunted by what had happened, Hawa continued with his upholder duties, progressing up and up until he became the captain of one of the squads.
Then, one day he vanished.
He had fled to the human realm to hunt for his brother. It was there he’d stay, tracking him down, losing him, and then tracking him down again. Little did he know the more he tried to keep an eye on Regent, the more he tried to dredge up the past Regent was determined to forget, the more it drove a stake between them.
Powers: Prevalent in both of his forms, Hawa has exceptional vision and hearing, as well as the ability to see at night. All of those in his clan have the ability to scent other beings with magic, if not directly identify what they are.
His magic abilities are, at their core, manipulation. That is to say, he can take a current magic and alter it to be something completely different than what it was. For instance, if one were to shoot a fireball at him, he may be able to manipulate the magic so it turns into a harmless gust of hot air. This requires a sufficient amount of magic and concentration, though—he’s by no means a master at this and can make mistakes or else fail to keep himself from being harmed. He’s good at manipulating the magic inside of things such as charms and talismans and has the knowledge of how to ward off bad spirits or creatures. Getting his hands on materials is an entirely different story.
He can also manipulate his magic in such ways to lend extra power to his fists—amplifying the strength of his punches beyond what a normal human would be capable of. This has its limits, of course, and he can’t go an extended period of time fighting like this without rest or else he’ll collapse from overexertion.
Talents/Abilities:: Hawa has good reflexes and is disciplined in areas of physical aptitude due to his training in the upholders. He’s got the knowledge of a captain, though not as much experience as some others. Though he knows strategies and rough basic ones for a lot of situations, his personality tempts him to charge in headfirst in more cases than not.
Personality: Headstrong and stubborn, Hawa was a child not prone to yielding or else backing down from others, and it has carried into his way of being as an adult. Whether it be a friendly competition or else an argument, he refuses to back down—more often than not, this can lead to others becoming exasperated with him or losing patience because of his bullheadedness. He has a hard time admitting that he’s wrong about things and especially doesn’t like being talked down to or else treated as somehow inferior or like a child (which, let’s face it, he kind of acts like sometimes).
His desperation to prove himself and be seen as someone to respect may be because he is, inside, an insecure person. His elder brother (of sorts) was a prodigy and Hawa grew up in his shadow, striving to be better, to be as good as Regent was. Even when he became an upholder and then a captain of a squad, he wasn’t satisfied, as his tendency to dwell on things kept the events with Regent lingering in his mind. It eventually led to him deserting his position and clan in order to go to the human realm in order to pursue Regent, unable to let things lie as they were. This may also be helped along by the fact that he has a brother complex the size of the fucking moon, as Regent was the person with whom he spent most of his time with and got both devoted (even if Hawa wouldn’t admit it) and extremely eager to prove himself to.
The problem with this is that he’s not good at expressing his internal thoughts or emotions. When it comes to divulging things of a delicate nature, he would rather clam up or end a conversation with a gruff dismissal. He wasn’t close to many others besides his brother when he was younger. Even his parents were often busy with their own respective duties. This also comes to when he’s wrong about something; he’d rather dismiss the topic altogether than face the fact that he was wrong (even if he is well-aware of the fact that he is).
This isn’t to say that he’s a bad person. Certainly, he can be considerate and kind when the situation warrants it, but also has no patience for those who ceaselessly complain or else do things he deems as trivial or annoying. He’s very awkward if it comes to comforting or listening to a person’s troubles, and can be expected to say something untactful without considering the other person’s situation that hard, more or less to try and end the conversation before it gets too uncomfortable. Mind, this applies to those whom he doesn’t know particularly well. While it’s hard to get close to him in some aspects, a person who does earns his loyalty and his protectiveness. He’s accustomed to looking after others from his time in the upholders, after all, looking out for his squad.
If a person does annoy him, he won’t make a secret of it, not one for faking a cheerful persona just to make nice. Each person will get their chances, though, and he’ll even talk to those who grudgingly earn his favour. As he gets closer to someone, he loosens up, and has a playful demeanour that will emerge if the timing is right. He likes to tease and poke fun at those whom he grows fond of—Regent did much the same to him and now Hawa has adopted that particular habit. It’s very hard to embarrass him, so when it comes to teasing, he’s the no-holds-barred sort who (again, citing his stubbornness) refuses to back down.
